Try this at home: drink a sip of water in front of a mirror and watch your neck. The thyroid gland moves up and down when you swallow. If you see or feel a swelling there, don't ignore it.
But don't panic either. Not every neck lump is thyroid, and most thyroid nodules are harmless. On this page I will explain which nodules need treatment, which don't, and how a benign nodule can be treated without removing the gland.

What is a thyroid nodule?
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. A nodule is a lump inside it. Some are solid, some are filled with fluid (cysts), and some are mixed.
Thyroid nodules are very common, and the large majority are benign, not cancer. Many are found by chance on a scan.
Symptoms
- A visible lump or swelling in the front of the neck
- A feeling of something stuck in the throat, or difficulty swallowing
- Pressure or discomfort in the neck, especially when lying down
- Change in voice (less common)
- Sometimes symptoms of an overactive thyroid if the nodule makes extra hormone
Many nodules cause no symptoms at all.
Do you need treatment?
Most nodules only need watching. Ask yourself:
- Is the nodule causing pressure, swallowing trouble or discomfort?
- Is it visible and bothering me, or growing on follow-up scans?
- Has the FNAC confirmed that it is benign?
How thyroid ablation works
Under local anaesthesia, and watching on ultrasound all the time, a thin probe is placed inside the nodule. Using radiofrequency or microwave energy, the nodule tissue is treated with controlled heat. Over the next few months the body absorbs it and the nodule shrinks.
For fluid-filled thyroid cysts, the fluid can often be drained with a needle, and if needed treated with ethanol to stop it refilling.
No cut, no stitches, no neck scar, and the healthy thyroid is left as it is. You usually go home the same day.
Ablation vs thyroid surgery
| Radiofrequency / microwave ablation | Surgery (thyroidectomy) | |
|---|---|---|
| Neck scar | None, only a needle prick | Yes, a cut on the neck |
| Thyroid gland | Preserved, only the nodule is treated | Part or all of the gland is removed |
| Lifelong thyroid tablets | Usually not needed | Often needed after total removal |
| Anaesthesia | Local | General |
| Hospital stay | Usually home the same day | Usually 1–3 days |
Ablation is for properly selected benign nodules. Surgery is still the right choice for some patients, including when cancer is suspected.
3 myths about thyroid lumps
Myth 1: “Every thyroid lump is cancer.” Wrong. Most are benign.
Myth 2: “If there is a lump, the whole thyroid must be removed.” Not always. Suitable benign nodules can be treated with ablation, keeping the gland.
Myth 3: “Every neck swelling is thyroid.” No. Lymph nodes and other lumps can also cause swelling. That is why ultrasound comes first.
Mistakes to avoid at home
- Ignoring a neck lump that is growing.
- Panicking and deciding on surgery before an ultrasound and FNAC.
- Trying oils, massage or home remedies to “melt” the lump.

Questions patients ask me
Can a thyroid nodule be treated without surgery?
Yes, if it is benign and suitable. Radiofrequency or microwave ablation shrinks the nodule with a thin needle under ultrasound, without a neck scar and without removing the gland.
Is thyroid ablation painful?
It is done under local anaesthesia. Some warmth or mild discomfort in the neck during the procedure and for a day or two afterwards is common.
How much does the nodule shrink?
The nodule shrinks gradually over months. Most patients notice relief from pressure and a smaller lump on follow-up scans. The exact change differs from person to person.
Will I need thyroid tablets after ablation?
Usually not, because the healthy thyroid gland is preserved. Your thyroid levels are checked on follow-up.
Do I need an FNAC before ablation?
Yes. A thin-needle test confirms that the nodule is benign before ablation is planned.
Is thyroid ablation covered by insurance?
Yes, it is covered by health insurance.
Thyroid ki gaanth ka ilaj bina operation ho sakta hai?
Haan, agar gaanth benign hai. Radiofrequency ya microwave ablation se ek patli sui se gaanth ko sikoda jaata hai. Gale par koi nishaan nahi aata aur thyroid gland bachi rehti hai.
Kya thyroid ki har gaanth cancer hoti hai?
Nahi. Zyaadatar gaanthein benign hoti hain. Ultrasound aur zaroorat ho toh FNAC se pakka pata chalta hai.
In short
- Most thyroid nodules are benign. Ultrasound, and FNAC if needed, come first.
- Small nodules without symptoms usually need only follow-up.
- Suitable benign nodules can be shrunk with RFA or microwave ablation: no neck scar, gland preserved.
